Thomson launches new nDVR solution

November 13, 2008 - Thomson has launched the latest version of its SmartVision Video on Demand (VoD) server, aimed at IPTV and cable operators and adding more features to improve video streaming and recording, as demand increases for network DVR (nDVR) solutions.

Thomson's SmartVision VoD 6.0 features a new family of streaming accelerators which reportedly double the capacity of the previous generation of VoD servers, and have a total streaming capacity of up to 16 Gbps. Each video server unit is now able to record over 200 TV channels. The server solution further supports advanced content distribution models like HTTP progressive download, rate limited or burst distribution to support over-the-top business models, in addition to managed network playout.

"Thomson’s SmartVision VoD range of products were designed with nDVR in mind and the need to offer a solution that can deliver many streams and record many channels, all within the same unit” said Tiaan Schutte, General Manager of Thomson’s Software Service Platforms. "SmartVision does not require the operator to choose between either a high number of TV channels inputs or a high output of video streams – making it a VoD solution with a truly symmetrical architecture that scales linearly.”
